Kashan Rugs
Kashan is a Persian city in the Esfahan province, however over centuries the word has almost become synonymous with "a fine hand knotted Persian rug".
Kashan rugs mostly have formal Persian designs with or without a medallion in the center. Blossoms and palmettes are commun along with meandering vines and elongated leaves in a colorful palette of strong shades of indigo blue, reds and ivory. The shapes on a Kashan rug are predominantly curvilinear with symmetrical repetition. Pictorial compositions are less common and considered desirable as collectibles.
Kashan design rugs are made with wool, silk and the occasional combination of both where the florals are silk and the main field is wool. The fringes are either cotton or silk.
